M1-5

March 4th, 2007

I have yet to do any reviews of bars on my site but I had such a fun time on Friday night that I was compelled to start doing so. I go out pretty regularly (OK, very regularly) so I might as well take some time to point out great places to go, as I come across them. By no means will I review every bar, as I usually do for restaurants, but special stars that could use some additional attention will get some publicity here. I bring you… M1-5

M1-5 is a bar in Tribeca which is the most amazing cross-section of everything I could ever look for on a night out. I always struggle in New York to find a place with dancing yet no velvet rope, a big bar but with tables as well, and a place that isn’t so packed that I can’t move. Bar games always help and of course I like a nice scene of young people and an atmosphere that isn’t super divey (though that can be fun on occasion). I had never heard of this bar until a friend proposed that I go with her on Friday night for a benefit party for Uganda that was being held there by Unight. I couldn’t be happier with the decision.

M1-5 is basically one gigantic warehouse-esque room with incredibly high ceilings. It has a big bar in the center of the room, surrounded by tables with space in between for people to stand and hang out. Japanese paper lanterns hang from the ceiling and the walls are bright red, emitting a more exotic feel to the room. There is a large DJ booth and dance floor plus a pinball table, jukebox, pool table, and darts. If they had a foozeball table I would have held onto the door of the bar and never let go, never let go. They have a great selection of specialty cocktails including a Hurricane which takes me back to my days at Pat O’s in New Orleans, at school. The DJ played a great mix of new stuff plus random classics such as Funky Cold Medina, Push It, and Back that A** Up, a favorite during my High School homecoming dances ;)

All in all, this was an awesome night and a discovery of my new favorite bar. I definitely recommend checking out M1-5. Just don’t tell too many people about it! View more information on M1-5 here, at Citysearch.
