About

June 12th, 2007

Hey, thanks for checking out StrumErika.com. The focus on this site is my insatiable appetite for exciting food, especially new restaurants in New York and recipes adapted from cookbooks I love or my own creations.

I’d be remiss if I did not mention that Wine Enthusiast is my family business, started by my parents in 1979. As such, I sprinkle in wine posts here as well. I should give the obligatory list of credentials which include an intermediate and advanced WSET (Wine and Spirits Education Trust) certification, though I do not think a certification is necessary to be knowledgeable or passionate about wine.

You might notice that many of the recipes and some of the restaurants I discuss on the site are kosher. That is due to a special person in my life who I refer to on this site as “E.” I make substitions and accomodations where necessary, so you’ll find loads of information here if eating kosher is your way of life. If not, you probably won’t notice much of a difference!

When I’m not eating and drinking copious amounts or earning my keep at Wine Enthusiast, I teach spinning classes at New York Health and Racquet Club, though I promise not to write any posts about working out (yawn!).

Need a restaurant recommendation? Shoot me an email at Erika@Strumerika.com. I’m happy to help.

About the Ratings:
I use a scale of Poor, Good, Very Good and Excellent to rate 4 criteria which I find most important in evaluating a restaurant experience:

Food: menu inspiration, general quality and taste of the food, and presentation
Service: timing of the meal and knowledge/amiability of the server and other staff
Value: quality of the food and service as compared to the price of the meal.

Each component takes into account the context of the restaurant. For example, I may expect to ask for a refill on water at a casual cafe but at a fine dining establishment, I would expect my glass to be replenished consistently.

I add a final verdict at the end, for kicks:

You Gonna Finish That? Every last bite
You Gonna Finish That? Meh, you can taste the side.
You Gonna Finish That? Not even worth a doggy bag.
